While going through one of my favorite ICT blogs I got to know that one of world’s leading Telecom provider companies Etisalat has been bullying PTCL for years. As they bought 26 percent of PTCL’s shares back in 2005. They still haven’t paid $800 Million while they are collecting $100 Million per year from profits of PTCL. From 2005 to date Etisalat has promised time and again to pay all the money but it never did. New promises were made all the time and new delegates were sent. But that hasn’t resulted in any progression. Even the president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari secretly visited UAE to settle this problem with Etisalat. But it looks like that they are in no mood to process the payments. They have asked the Pakistani authorities to clear their $73 Million payments. The Pakistani authorities asked Etisalat to deduct it from the amount of $800 Million which Etisalat have to pay. But it looks like Etisalat have other plans to collect profit without doing any investment.
Bigger Telecom providers has been monopolizing smaller ISPs and Telecom providers. Like PTCL has recently monopolized nearly all the smaller ISPs in Pakistan and they had to shut down because either their profits were too low or they were already going in loss. LinkDot Net a famous Pakistani ISP also recently closed its services in Pakistan.
Though, the business monopoly is nothing new but this profit bullying scheme of Etisalat is some thing which has never been witnessed before. Pakistani authorities might soon consider forcefully taking over the PTCL if Etisalat isn’t serious about making the payment. This will send a clear message that Pakistani authorities are ready to take any effective action if needed. This problem has also not been addressed by any mainstream political leader or media anchor person. Looks like leaders who call for a ‘change‘ event don’t want to upset their sheikh friends in UAE.
