It was department party of computer science and computer engineering departments next morning. So, I slept late as I was preparing for the party. YES, at last 18th of June was coming. We had waited for it long enough making stage plays, parodies and other stage performances and we were quite ready for it now. One of the traditions of CS/CE party was the fashion show! It was the best fashion show Balochistan University of I.T, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) saw every year. No other department did it so well ever. This time my friend Aqeel was taking part in the fashion show on my request. He had practiced walking on ramp a lot and he was doing it perfectly now. He was as excited as anyone else. He had asked Noman, another class mate of ours, to bring camera and take his pictures while he walked on ramp. All this was on my head and I slept quite late at night. It was around 3 AM when I went to bed.
It was morning of 18th June, 2012. I remember my mom calling my name again and again. She was asking me to wake up as I was getting late for party. But I was feeling too tired and couldn’t wake up. So, I preferred to sleep a little more. I fell asleep again in a little while.
Suddenly, the air in my room got sucked out and I heard an EXPLOSION!! Every inch of my room shook as I heard it and window glass vibrated. I was horrified by what just happened. I sat in my bed and my eyes met the clock on the wall. It was about quarter to 9. I ran towards the staircase and went down to living room. Where my mother was sitting equally worried. I asked what just happened but she had no idea. I went outside where my father was standing and he said it might have been a rocket explosion. I went to my room and got in bed again. Not worrying about what just happened NOT caring about who just lost his life.
20 minutes later my brother came running to my room. He said, “Your university bus just got attacked in a bomb blast near FIA office. Do you know that?”. Suddenly, my brain went blank. The air in my lungs got sucked out. I couldn’t even imagine that something might have happened to my dear fellows. I changed my dress and ran in panic towards the blast location near FIA office on Samungli Road which was on 10 minutes walking distance from my home. I was breathless when I reached there as I have been running all the way. There was the university bus I would have been in if I had woken up earlier. It was completely destroyed in the bomb blast. A burnt wreck of bus stood there. There were no bodies as people had took the injured and dead bodies to hospital. I went back home and left for the hospital immediately.
At reaching hospital I saw a very sad picture. People were mourning, mothers and sisters were crying in disbelief. I started finding people I knew who were supposed to be in that bus. After searching a little I got to know that my dear friend Aqeel was no more. It was like I had lost. I had lost everything. I spent all day with rest of my friends waiting for the body of Aqeel to be given to his family.
When Aqeel’s body was finally revealed to us. Noman went to Aqeel’s body and said, “Aqeel, see. I brought the camera with me. Here is it. But why aren’t you on ramp?”. Tears started coming from my eyes. I wished it was a dream and I wake up from it. But this wasn’t a dream and we all had to accept that.
This June we had another CS/CE department party and it went as great as any other had. But the difference was there was no Aqeel who was excited to walk on ramp and Noman was sitting quite in the crowd instead of staying near stage and taking pictures of his dear friend.
BUITEMS Blast happened on June 18, 2012 when one of the university buses was coming packed from students to city campus (Jinnah town). Many lives where lost. It was a black day indeed in the history of BUITEMS and Balochistan. Here is news link of BUITEMS Blast.
